Non-Traditional Students

NDSU defines non-traditional students as students who are 25 years of age or older, did not start college directly after high school, or have been away from school for a period of time.

Non-traditional students are still considered first-year students and are therefore required to complete an orientation prior to signing up for courses. There are several options available to incoming non-traditional students.

Full day first-year student orientation sessions

Non-traditional students beginning in the fall semester may attend a full day orientation session over the summer. These sessions are designed for incoming first-year students, so it is possible that some of the information will not be relevant to a non-traditional student. This could include eating at the dining center and visiting the residence halls. This program lasts approximately from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.

Sessions are filled on a first come, first served basis and reservations will be accepted beginning in early April. Each session is capped at 200 students. For a list of dates, please click here.

Half day transfer orientation sessions

Half day sessions are offered throughout the year for transfer students and first-year students not starting during the fall semester. These programs cover the basics about attending NDSU. This includes information about finances, student services, advising, and course registration.

For students entering in the summer or fall terms, reservations will be accepted beginning in late February. For a list of dates when the half day sessions are offered, please click here. Please note that the time of day during which these sessions are held can vary.

If you are unable to attend an in-person orientation session, please contact Student Success Programs at 701-231-8379 or
