Online Tutoring Through

While working face to face with a live tutor through small group and drop-in tutoring may be the most efficient and effective form of tutoring, we also realize there are times when you may not be able to stop into ACE due to conflicting schedules or you need assistance after hours. Because of this, we are happy to offer NDSU student online tutoring through Smarthinking. Students work one-on-one with real-time with an expert tutor using a virtual whiteboard.

How Do I Access Smarthinking?

To access online tutoring, please click the link below. You will be prompted to enter your NDSU Username and Password. From here, you may elect to access drop-in tutoring, schedule a session with a specific tutor, or submit a question to be answered when a tutor logs in.

Who are the Tutors?

Smarthinking Tutors are not affiliated with NDSU. Tutors may be college faculty, graduate students, high school teachers, and retired educators hired through Smarthinking.

How Often Can I Visit?

Online Tutoring should be used as a supplemental service; therefore if at all possible, students should first try to visit with a live tutor though ACE before accessing online tutoring. Each NDSU student is awarded five free hours of online tutoring each semester. Requests for additional access will be awarded based on individual need (e.g. schedule conflicts, living out of town, etc.). Please submit any requests for additional hours by emailing

Smarthinking Resources

The Smarthinking Student Handbook is available to help you troubleshoot any questions that you may have.

Videos tutorials are also available for How to Use Drop-In Tutoring, How to Schedule a Session, How to Use the Whiteboard, and How to Communicate with Tutors.
