Project Title: Replacement and Addition of Library Public Access Worksheet
Award number: 0202
Project Leader: Nem Schlecht
Report Period: final
In the second round for our "ThinkNIC" purchases, we purchased 20 stations and distributed them through the Main Library, Pharmacy Library, and Architecture Library, bringing up the total number of Internet accessible machines in all locations. As a part of this, 4 stations were also placed in the student lounge area of the Main Library. The machines purchased in this second phase had increaded CPU power and memory. We also purchased monitors from a third party vendor (instead of the ThinkNIC company), so the new machines have nice 17 inch monitors.
Progress toward Milestones:
Users still occasionally complain about the slowness of the machines and
some incompatibilities (for example, the machines cannot load a MicroSoft
Word documents, but they can load PDF files). However, the machines *can*
access all forms of web-based e-mail services (Hotmail, Yahoo, NDSU) as
well as the NDSU Libraries catalog system via WebPALS with no problems.
On several occasions, users have stolen the ethernet cables of some of the machines in the lounge. We make our own ethernet cables, so this is only a minor annoyance.
I think that this may be the last batch of the ThinkNIC clients that we
purchase. Although the machines are fairly cheap and convenient to set
up, there are other inexpensive alternatives currently available. For
example, Walmart has started selling a full computer (w/o monitor) for
$200, which is now *cheaper* that the ThinkNIC clients we purchased this
last time around. We are evaluating our options and the possible pros and
cons of using such systems over the ThinkNIC clients.
