Install a wireless access point in the Library to allow patrons to connect to the internet without using cords. Provide patrons with expansion cards for both laptops (10) and PDAs (2) that are available for check-out.
Progress toward Milestones:
The wireless access point was installed by ITS near the end of the 2003 in the lounge area of the basement in the Main Library and several test subjects have been using the access point. The access point is located in a place where it accessible not only in the student lounge, but also in the Reference area of the Library (the wireless signals travel through the ceiling into to main floor). The cost of the cards for laptops and PDAs dropped considerably between the time the original proposal was submitted and purchase as. As a result, we were able to purchase twice the number of laptop cards as originally proposed and still came in considerably under budget.
All that remains with the project is hammering out a few minor problems with the device driver and VPN (Virtual Private Network) software for both laptops and PDAs. After this problem is fixed, we will burn copies of the software (which is freely available) onto CDROMs that will be provided along with the wireless card when a patron checks a card out. Demand for this service is already much lower than expected. The main reason for this is that the lounge area in the Library is already a "highly" wired site, with over 15 open network ports. We are going to try to do some promotional items to see if we can get more users using the new serice.
