Project Title: Expansion of Library Web Services
Award number: 0406
Project Leader: Nem Schlecht
Report Period: mid-year
- Replacement and expansion of NDSU Libraries web service offerings. The NDSU Libraries web server offers a wide range of services to the faculty, staff, and students at NDSU. Our electronic journals, index to online databases, interfaces for inter-library loan and the Periodicals Pull service are all heavily used. Our current server is over 6 years old: currently it has only 128Mb of RAM, a single 266Mhz processor and only 8Gb of total disk space.
Progress toward Milestones:
- The hardware has been purchased, but migration and testing are still in progress. We incurred some delays from the PALS/ODIN transfer, mainly time constraints. The new server will be put into full production either on President's Day weekend or during spring break. The web server is integral to the function of the Libraries and we don't want to cause problems with service interuptions for any students or faculty members.
- Since I had extra funds from previous TFAC awards, I went ahead and purchased slightly better hardware. I was able to purchase a dual processor server with 3.2Ghz processors, instead of 2.8Ghz as I had originally requested. This will most likely add 1-2 years to the life of the server. I plan on spending the remaining on funds on purchasing redundant (spare) hard drives for the server.
