The replacement of hexavalent chromes from coatings due to their carcinogenic effects has put an emphasis on development of environmentally friendly coatings . Encapsulation technique has a large array of applications from pharmacy to food sciences. The objective of this approach is to release the contents in the microcapsules on a need basis. More recently these microcapsules have been used for the development of “smart” or self healing materials. By encapsulating corrosion inhibitors into polymeric shell, one can use these capsules in coating systems as pigments for corrosion inhibition. In my work I am trying to disperse pH sensitive microcapsules into commonly used coatings systems and monitoring its performance over times using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy. I am also trying to synthesize these microcapsules so that we can incorporate different inhibitors into the polymeric shell.

Prior funding for this project was from NASA KSC, Luz Marina Calle program manager.  Continuing collaborative efforts are underway.
