Deepor Beel Wetland Case Study: ECS 740 students are presently working on Deepor Beel Beel Wetland. One of major threats Deepor is facing is the dumping of garbage by Guwahati Municipal Corporation since last year. Concerned public and non-profits have been trying to make the authorities understand the importance of the wetland and why it should be protected. But who cares about the "wasteland"?

Course Content: Introduction to regional and global environmental issues, policies, and regulations. Integreted approach to control and prevention of evironmental degradation. Life Cycle Assessment (also use GaBi4 Software). ISO 14000 series. Methods for environmental data collection, analysis, and management. Introduction to environmental modeling (basics). Methods for environmental risk assessment, feasibility study, and environmental decision making.

Course Objectives: The course is intended to give students an understanding of current environmental issues and tools for analysis of data for environmental management. The issues are examined from the worldwide perspectives of science, engineering, business and society. Environmental Management is a priority area in the government, business, non-profit sectors. The course will target to prepare the students for job in these sectors. The course would be useful to students from science and engineering. It would also be useful for scientists, engineers, decision-makers, regulators, and consultants.
Course Outcomes: Students will have a comprehensive knowledge of integrated environmental management with a global perspective. It will help them in environmental decision-making from a socio-economic and environmental standpoint. Students will obtain basic skills on collection, analysis, and management of environmental data. They will master techniques for environmental assessment and feasibility studies. Most importantly, through this course the students will be able to correlate their research and course works to the big picture of the environment.
Course Grading: Class tests, quizzes, and assignments. Further, written analyses (including presentation there of) will be assigned that will enable students to become personally engaged in the issues covered in the course. Students will also be asked to read books related to the environmental issues discussed in the class.
Text Book: No formal text book. Students will have read a variety of books, research journals, and browse the internet.
