Class Notes


  • Harold Goetz, 81, BS’ 60, MS ’63 botany, was a former educator, researcher and administrator at NDSU and Colorado State University. He served as dean and chair of the botany/biology department at NDSU, and also served as chair of the Tri-College University Center for Environmental Studies. His honors included the NDSU Doctor of Service Award and a 1960 Fullbright scholarship to study in Germany. He lived in Fort Collins, Colo.
  • Leah Rogne, MS '83 education, co-edited a book, “Advance Care Planning: Community about Matters of Life and Death.” She recently retired as professor of sociology at Minnesota State University, Mankato, where she taught applied sociology, human services planning and nursing home administration. She and her husband, Fred Schumacher, live at Gheen, Minn.
  • Andrew John Bjur, BArch ’99 architecture, was among first list of "5 Under 40" published in the West Central Tribune. The inaugural group was recognized for their leadership, professional contributions and community involvement in the Willmar, Minn., area.
  • Herman R. Durazno, MS ’11 construction management, was promoted to project manager for the Laurin Group. He previously was a construction project coordinator. He lives in Toronto, Canada.
  • Vicki (Thorstad) Schlenker, BS ’94 accounting, was hired as director of finance for the Catholic Charities North Dakota in Fargo.
  • Wade Boeshans, BS ’95 civil engineering, was promoted to president of BNI Coal. He had been general manager of BNI, a subsidiary of Allete, since 2009. He was hired by BNI in 2005 as an assistant mine manager and was later promoted to operations manager. He lives in Washburn, N.D.
  • Wayne Carlson, BS ’75 agricultural economics, will retire as director of the Livestock Development Division of the North Dakota Department of Agriculture, effective April 11. He has held the post since 1993. His duties related to dairy production, feed registration, livestock sales, meat inspection, animal waste management and animal damage control. He and his wife, Denise, live in Mandan, N.D. 
  • Eric A. Johnson, BS ’91 mass communication, retired from the North Dakota Air National Guard, marking the end of a 29-year military career. He was named the Air National Guard Videographer of the Year in 1998, received the Air Combat Command Superior Performer Award in 2004 and was named Defense Video and Imagery Distribution System Journalist of the Month in April 2011. He’s also received more than 20 Air Force and Air National Guard multimedia awards. 
  • Elizabeth Pearce, MS ’07 psychology, was named program coordinator and supervisor for comprehensive assessment services and trainee supervisor at the Portia Bell Hume Behavioral Health and Training Center in Fremont, Calif.
  • Peter Balkan, 86, BS ’51 civil engineering, worked as a civil engineer for the U.S Soil Conservation Service. He served many years as a scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America. He retired in 1976 to Lake Maud, Minn., and South Padre Island, Texas. He lived in Mission, Texas.
