Class Notes


  • Darrell Mitchell, 91, MS ’53 chemistry, was a 30-year research chemist with Dow Corning Corp. in Midland, Michigan. He was a member of the American Chemical Society. He was an Army veteran who lived in Midland.
  • Russell Duncan, 70, BS ’72 civil engineering, owned Service Oil in Battle Lake, Minnesota, until 1996. He then worked for Farm and Home Oil Co. in Elbow Lake, Minnesota, before starting Russell Duncan Services. He lived in rural Henning, Minnesota.
  • Leo Christianson, 91, BS ’52 civil engineering, owned Century Controls Inc. and held three engineering patents. He was an Air Force veteran who lived in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota.
  • Helen (Schrenk) Gussner, 92, Diploma ’51 Bismarck Hospital School of Nursing, worked in hospitals in North Dakota, Washington and Massachusetts. She lived in Mandan, North Dakota.
  • Donald Salmonson, 84, BS ’58 arts and science, lived in Lincoln, Nebraska.
  • Paul M. Swanson, 77, BS ’66, BS ’68 arts and science, worked in materials management at St. Luke’s Hospital/MeritCare/Sanford Health System from 1965 until he retired in 2012. He lived in Fargo.
  • John Malpert Jr., 85, BS ’59 agricultural education, MS ’72, agricultural economics, worked for 30 years for the Farmers Home Administration with stops in McClusky, Jamestown, Linton and Bowbells, North Dakota. After retirement, He became a certified real estate appraiser. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the North Dakota National Guard. He lived in in Dilworth, Minnesota.
  • Garrett Houghton, 30, BS ’13 geology, worked for Gravel Products Inc. of Minot, North Dakota. He lived in Bismarck, North Dakota.
  • Jeanne (Danielson) Wulf, 95, Diploma ’47 Bismarck Hospital School of Nursing, worked in public health nursing, including 24 years in the First District Health Unit in McLean County. She was a Red Cross certified swimming instructor. She lived in Bismarck, North Dakota.
  • Walter Balmer Jr., 83, BS ’59 physical education, worked for the Fargo YMCA and the Sioux City, Iowa, YMCA before becoming a teacher for the Sioux City Public School System. He lived in Sioux City.
