Class Notes


  • John Cook, 74, BS ’70 zoology, was an integral part of Cook and Keup Turkey Farm, Mohall, North Dakota. He was a member of the North Dakota Grain Growers, North Dakota Turkey Federation and several county boards. In 1995, he was honored at the Harvest Bowl at NDSU as an outstanding agriculturalist. He lived in Fargo.
  • Rita (Williamson) Soine, 80, BS ’65 home economics, spent the majority of her teaching career in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, where she retired in 1999. She and her husband later started T&R Tree Nursery in Thief River Falls. She lived in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota.  
  • John Nicka, 99, BS ’53 physical education, was a physical education teacher in Chicago schools, and later taught driver’s education and elementary physical education in Madison, Wisconsin. He was a Navy veteran who lived in Madison.
  • Joseph Thomas, 82, BS ’62 general agriculture, was an agricultural loan officer, with stops in Wahpeton, Bowbells, Rugby, Jamestown and Cooperstown, North Dakota, and Bad Axe, Michigan. He lived in Fargo.
  • Brian Sillanpaa, 57, BS ’89 civil engineering, was a vice president of Barr Engineering, Minneapolis. He lived in Hopkins, Minnesota.
  • Marjorie (Moffitt) Engen, 80, MS ’99 child development and family science, was an anthropology professor at Minnesota State University Moorhead for 30 years. She lived in Hawley Minnesota.
  • John Halgren, 62, BS ’90 horticulture, served 37 years in the Army National Guard from 1982 to 2019. He was deployed around the world, including Desert Storm and Afghanistan. He lived in Penn, North Dakota.
  • Wade Johnson, 70, BS ’73 electrical and electronic engineering, was a civilian contractor for the U.S. Navy and then was a site engineer for the Federal Aviation Administration. He later was a partner in Western Associates, an engineering firm that provided consulting and construction services to civilian airports in the U.S., Canada, Japan and Russia. He lived in Valley City, North Dakota.
  • Leo Hoffer, 76, BS ’68 pharmacy, MS ’74, pharmaceutical sciences, was a licensed pharmacist for more than 50 years, primarily working in southern California. He lived in Victorville, California.
  • Brian Koski, 53, BS ’99 construction management, worked in the construction industry, most recently with Mortenson Co. He was a member of the North Dakota Air National Guard, retiring in 2012. He was an Air Force veteran who lived in Hawley, Minnesota.
