"Nine-tenths of the universe, in fact, is the paperwork."  - as any professor knows
From "Thief of Time" (author Terry Pratchett)

Coatings are, and will probably always be, the principal means of controlling appearance and providing protection in applications and infrastructure all around us. Polymer coatings remain a fertile and interesting field because many modern inventions require protection, appearance or a special function provided by coatings; even nanomaterials are often deployed as a coating.  Like all useful technologies, successful implementation of coatings requires knowledge and use of many different aspects of materials science, engineering, physics, and chemistry.
