Sphingidae: Macroglossinae: Dilophonotini

Hodges #: 7853.

Identification: Rfw 24.9 mm, fw marginal band with dentate inner edge, discal cell scale covered or bisected by scale-line, hw marginal band relatively broad, ventral thorax and legs yellow, abdomen black.

Similar species: 7855.

Distribution: southern Canada and eastern United States, extending northwestward to Alaska.

Hosts: Larvae feed on Symphoricarpos– snowberry, Lonicera– honeysuckle, also Prunus– plum, and Crataegus– hawthorn. In ND, possibly only Symphoricarpos albus (L.) Blake.

Note: a record of H. gracilis from the state appears to have been based upon one of the many color variants of this species.
