Sphingidae: Macroglossinae: Philampelini


Eumorpha anchemola (Cramer 1779)

Common name: listed here as the 'Pepper-vine sphinx.'

Hodges #: 7857.

Identification: Rfw 72 mm, fw mottled brown and green, fading to dull brownish black after death.  Ventral surface orange-yellow.

Similar species: 7859.

Distribution: northern Argentina into Mexico, also Trinidad.  Strays to southern Texas.

Hosts: Larvae feed on Ampelopsis sp. -- pepper-vine.

Note: The single ND record was transported into the state on bananas which entered the U.S. via Florida.
