Playwrights, Poets, and Early Modern Culture

The materials provided here provide insight into Theile's research as well as her teaching interests and have been assembled over the past ten years. An effort has been made to organize these materials by play, topic, and historical period. In addition to bibiliographies, an overview of Renaissance plays and a timeline of Renaissance events can be found here, both of which highlight major events in the life of Shakespeare within the greater context of early modern culture. The journal questions are primarily Shakespeare specific and meant to direct student readings of class material and help them prepare for class discussion and lectures. Links to Renaissance resources on the Internet have been established to facilitate student research.

Demonological Treatises & Continental Europe

Theile is particularly interested in tracing cultural links between continental European demonological literature and and the literature written for the early modern stage. Thanks to a fellowship from the Dr. Günther Findel-Stiftung, Theile spent the summer of 2005 studying German pamphlets and treatises concerned with magic, witchcraft, and sorcery at the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbuettel. Following the transmission of belief systems from continental Europe to England, Theile analyzes the impact of the Reformation and printing on early modern culture and on playwrights' engagement with superstitions in early modern London.
