Arctiidae: Lithosiinae


Lycomorpha pholus (Drury 1773)

Common name: listed here as 'Black-and-red lichen moth.'

Hodges #: 8087.

Identification: Rfw 12.6 mm, basal 1/2 of fw and 1/3 of hw red; palpi short, ocelli absent.

Similar species: 8083, 8089, 8114, 8125.

Distribution: southern Canada, northern and central U. S., southwestward to Mexico.

Hosts: Larvae feed on lichens.

Notes: N.D. specimens are L. p. miniata Packard, 1872.  Eastern specimens of the nominate race have the red replaced by yellow.
