Course Description

Theme: Crop plants are of value because of specific traits of value to man. These traits are the result of specific genes. Therefore, the experimental question becomes, what are the genes that control these traits? What technical procedures are necessary to identify and eventually clone the important agronomic genes? What is the function of the genes that control a specific phenotype? What cis-acting elements and trans-acting factors are responsible for the expression of the gene? This will be the collective theme of the course this year.

Course lecture/discussion/problem solving format: In general, a topic will be covered on one day, and during the following session the class will meet to discuss papers or solve problems related to the previous lecture topic. Each student is expected to come to class prepared to participate in discussion of the paper(s) or solve problems.
