Upward Bound is a federally funded program through the Department of Education hosted out of North Dakota State University that provides holistic and year-round supportive services to students.
The purpose of the program is to help prepare and motivate income-eligible (determined by household size and taxable income) and/or first-generation (primary parents/guardians of the student do not have a bachelor’s degree) be successful in high school and go on to attend post-secondary education at a college or university of their choosing. Upward Bound has 3 elements: academic year services, summer program, and summer bridge after high school graduation. By participating in Upward Bound events, students are not only growing and learning, but they are also earning some money (up to $30/month during the academic year, and additional compensation for participation in the Upward Bound Summer Program).

Upward Bound aims to enhance student experiences and development by cultivating a supportive learning environment that allows students to focus on growing their skills, talents, and motivations to succeed in high school and transition to post-secondary education.
Vision: North Dakota State University Upward Bound’s vision is to increase access and opportunities for students to succeed in high school and enroll in and graduate from post-secondary education. By participating in the Upward Bound program, students are empowered to positively impact themselves, their communities, and the world around them.
Educational Priority: Through participation in the NDSU Upward Bound program, students will learn essential life skills that will help them transition to college and to a career in an ever-changing world.
