I'm Legal Counsel in the General Counsel's Office at Thomson Reuters. I work in the government space, negotiating tech deals with public‑sector customers. The role involves translating tech jargon, smoothing out contract language, and negotiating terms and conditions. My English degree has been one of my biggest strengths in my career. All the writing, analyzing, and communicating I did for my English major shows up every day when I’m breaking down complex ideas, navigating conversations, and making sure agreements actually make sense for the people who have to use them.

What advice would you give to someone considering an English major?

Don't hesitate—go for it. There are so many directions you can go with an English degree. At one point, I wanted to work in publishing, which was a completely viable path especially with courses like the publishing classes offered at NDSU. The major gives you room to explore different interests, figure out what work you enjoy, and build skills that translate into a lot of different career paths. It opens doors rather than narrowing them.
