I opened a cafe/bakery called Moonrise Cafe in Fargo with a good friend of mine in October 2023. As a co-owner, I develop the menu, manage our staff of about 25 people, and write a ton of emails!

How did your time as an English major prepare you for your current role or your career?
Studying English Composition prepared me for writing resumes and cover letters so much so that I managed to explore a lot of careers before opening our business. I wrote stories for the newspaper, managed social media for a concert booking agent, worked as a production assistant on the set of Yellowstone, and was an assistant editor for the History Channel before opening a cafe in Fargo! Technical writing and written communication are both excellent skills to have in any field, but as a business owner I cherish the ability to write user friendly recipes, well thought out emails, and eye-catching advertisements on social media and beyond.
What advice would you give to someone considering an English major?
While choosing a major in college can seem daunting or frivolous, I highly recommend studying English because it's applicable to most careers. Especially if you're creative minded, writing and reading are the perfect foundation and/or gateway to your desired field. When applying for jobs, usually your first impression will be in the form of a written document. It's really important that you make it count!
Additionally, I found my English professors to all be very worldly and kind.
