Barley Variety Trial Results
Hello! I hope you’re having a great day.
We received about 0.5 inch of rain in the past week. For the month of October we received on average 4.40 inches of rain which is 2.75 inches above normal. We have received on average 13.29 inches of rain since April 1st which is only 3.65 inches of rain below average. Temperatures were above normal for the past week. The range in the high temperature for the month of October was 41 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit. The average high temperature for the month of October was 58 degrees Fahrenheit which is two degrees above normal for the month.
Harvest is moving along slowly. About 95% of the soybeans have been harvested and about 65% of the corn have been harvested.

When preparing to purchase two-row barley seed to plant next year it is a good idea to check out the North Dakota State University two-row barley variety trial results. I will summarize four trials from the surrounding area.
The Dazey, North Dakota site was a conventional tillage site planted after soybean on April 29, 2021 and harvested on August 16, 2021. The Wishek, North Dakota site was a conventional tillage site planted after soybean on April 22, 2021 and harvested August 5, 2021. There were two trials at Carrington, one conventional tillage and the other one no-tillage. The conventional tillage trial at Carrington was planted after dry bean on April 21, 2021 and harvested on August 3, 2021 and the no-tillage trial was planted after barley on April 23, 2021 and harvested August 6, 2021. The two trials at Carrington were planted at 1,100,000 pure live seeds per acre. I assume the other two trials were planted at the same population, but that information was not available.
The highest yielding variety at the Dazey site was ND Genesis at 80.3 bushels per acre. Other varieties yielding statistically similar to ND Genesis were ABI Cardinal at 80.1 bushels per acre, AAC Connect at 78.9 bushels per acre, Brewski at 77.3 bushels per acre, Pinnacle at 77.1 bushels per acre, CDC Fraser at 76.3 bushels per acre, AAC Synergy at 71.8 bushel per acre, CDC Bow at 69.7 bushels per acre, and Explorer at 69.7 bushels per acre. AAC Synergy yielded the most at 78.5 bushels per acre for a three-year average.
The highest yielding variety at the Wishek site was Pinnacle at 35.3 bushels per acre. Other varieties yielding statistically similar to Pinnacle were CDC Fraser at 34 bushels per acre, AAC Synergy at 33.2 bushels per acre, Conlon at 32.8 bushels per acre, Brewski at 31.7 bushels per acre, ABI Cardinal at 31.5 bushels per acre, and CDC Bow at 29.4 bushels per acre. AAC Synergy yielded the most at 65.9 bushels per acre for a three-year average.
The highest yielding variety at the Carrington site that was conventional tillage was ABI Cardinal at 57.9 bushels per acre. There was no statistical significance between any of the varieties in the trial, so all were similar. AAC Connect yielded the most at 66.9 bushels per acre for a three-year average.
The highest yielding variety at the Carrington site that was no-tillage was ND Genesis at 68.1 bushels per acre. There was no statistical significance between any of the varieties in this trail as well, so all were similar. ND Genesis yielded the most at 69.6 bushels per acre for a two-year average.
Other data collected at these sites where days to head, plant height, plant lodging, kernel plumpness, kernel thinness, grain protein, and test weight. To access this other data go to the following web page to get to this information: https://www.ag.ndsu.edu/varietytrials . Consider some of these traits in addition to yield in determining the best varieties to purchase.
Hope you have a great day and weekend!
