Audition Excerpts

MUSC 311, Section 1, Jazz Ensemble - 12:30-1:45
MUSC 311, Section 2, Jazz Lab Band – 2:00 – 3:15

Auditions will consist of two parts:
1. On Tuesday, August 22, the Rhythm section AND horn players will meet in room 118, and form a ‘reading’ band to audition the sections and rhythm players. Saxophones who play multiple saxophones may want to bring more than one. There will be a baritone saxophone at the audition with a couple of mouthpieces.
2. On Thursday, August 24, players will audition individually for the Professor. This audition will consist of an audition excerpt, sign reading, and optional improvisation.

Individual Auditions will occur during the band meeting times.
Jazz Ensemble 12:20-1:45. Jazz Lab Band 2:00- 3:15

Audition Sign Up times will be posted on the Professor’s door.

Individual Audition Directions

Saxophones:


Please prepare the attached etude “You’re The Last One” with the play along (see below). Make sure that you have the correct key of Alto/Baritone (C) or Tenor (F). This etude is based on the standard “There Will Never Be Another You.” You will perform with a recorded backing track, at a reasonable tempo of your choosing.

Trumpets:


Please prepare the attached etude “You’re The Last One” with the play along (see below). This etude is based on the standard “There Will Never Be Another You.” You will perform with a recorded backing track, at a reasonable tempo of your choosing.

Rhythm Section:


“All The Things You Are.” Please print off your part for your instrument. As a band, we will play from the beginning up to measure 37. Piano and guitar comping can be of your own interpretation, but play the written lines as they are.

“Oclupaca”. Play as written up to measure 37. Play from m. 73 through m. 84 (Afro-Cuban).
