Areolar Connective Tissue

Areolar connective tissue is found throughout the body. It provides cushioning and flexibility wherever it is present. Its main cell type is the fibroblast, or fiber-producing cell. The fibroblasts produce two kinds of intercellular fibers:

bulletcollagen - the main fiber type which is strong but relatively inelastic
bulletelastic fibers - a minor component.

The fibers are arranged in a loose, random meshwork.
