The Gonads

 The gonads produce hormones as well as reproductive cells.

Ovarian hormones:

bulletEstrogen is produced by developing follicles. It causes the signs of heat and prepares the female reproductive tract for breeding and the onset of pregnancy.
bulletProgesterone is produced by the corpus luteum which develops from the empty follicle after ovulation. It is necessary for pregnancy to be maintained.

 

Testicular hormones:

bulletTestosterone is responsible for male secondary sex characteristics.
bulletEstrogen is produced in very small amount in the testes. Its role is unclear.
