The Nervous System

The nervous system is the basic communication and control system in the body. It monitors the animal's internal and external environments and directs activities to maintain the well-being of the body (homeostasis).

General Terminology

bulletneur/neuro- = nerve
bulletmyel/myelo- = spinal cord
bulletenceph/encephalo- = brain
bulletcephal/cephalo- = head

Basic anatomy and physiology

The basic functional unit of the nervous system is the neuron - a cell specialized for irritability and conductivity.

Basic divisions

bulletThe central nervous system (CNS) is made up of the brain and the spinal cord.
bulletThe peripheral nervous system is made up of cord-like nerves which link the central nervous system with the rest of the body.
