Use the CMS News feature

To use the tt_news application in CMS, your site must be configured in a special way. If your site did not request to use the news application on the site request form, it must enabled before you will be able to add news articles as described below.

If your site did not originally request to use news but would like to use it now, please contact us and we can enable it for you. Don't forget to tell us your site name/address!

Insert new news item

  1. Locate the container news articles in the News page in a folder called Articles
  2. Right-click the Articles page and select New
  3. In the New record frame, click News
    • If you do not have the option "News," it is because you do not have sufficient permissions to author News or the News application is not installed for your site
  4. Complete the news record fields as desired (see Author the news article, below, for details of the fields)
    • To insert images or links, use the Relations tab of the news record form
  5. Save and close the news element

Alternate method (this only works if a news record already exists in the news repository you are modifying)

  1. Using the Page module, click the Articles page in the Page tree
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page module interface and locate the news list, as shown in the image below (1)

    1. List of news items in the TYPO3 backend
  3. Click the Create new content element button
  4. Fill the news record fields as normal

Author the news article

To preview most options described below, see an example article.

  1. For all news articles, you must provide a Title.
If you do not provide a title, there will be a news entry in the news list that is blank and has no link to view the full article
  2. (optional) Uncheck the Hide: checkbox unless the article should be hidden from site visitors
  3. (optional) If the article should not be visible on the site immediately when published, or should be hidden from the site on some specific date, provide Start: and/or Stop: dates, respectively.
If a Stop date is provided, the article will not be available at all, even in the news archive after the Stop date
  4. Select a news Type: (see "News articles may be one of three Types," below to learn more)
  5. Provide a Date/Time: for the article. This is the date that will be printed in the article itself, or posted as the "published date" for aesthetic purposes only. For example, this can be back-dated if the article was copied from a legacy system, or future-dated if you are preparing an article that won't be published right away
  6. (optional) Archive date:
The date the article will be removed/hidden from the list/latest view and be available only to visitors who click through the archive menus. The article will not be removed from the site or from the RSS feed. If these are the desired effects, use the Stop: date field instead
  7. (optional) Author: and Email:
The appearance of these field varies by site, but in most cases, this is displayed in the single article view as a link to the e-mail address provided
  8. (optional) Subheader:
If provided, this will be used as "teaser text" in list/latest views of the articles and will appear in styled text at the top of the single article view
  9. Text: (not applicable to External/Internal URL type)
    News article copy
  10. (not used) Keywords:
  11. (not used) Category
  12. (optional) Images and Caption (also Image alttext and Image titletext if News type)
Any images, if added, may be displayed in the list, latest or single article views. The caption, if provided, will display near the image. The appearance varies by site
  13. Links
Are added to the end of the single article view in a "Links" list section
  14. Related news:
Are added to the end of the single article view in a "Related News" list section
  15. Files:
Are added to the end of the single article in a "Files" list section

News articles may be one of three Types

  • News
  • Link internal page
  • Link external page

Link external page

Instead of providing body copy for the news article, this news type enables you to insert a link to a news article written by someone else, for example a Fargo Forum or NDSU It's Happening at State news article.

This article usually appears the same as any other news article in the news list, except clicking the news article will direct the visitor to the link provided in the External URL field.

When inserting an article of this type, remember that visitors may not have accounts/privileges to retrieve the article so you should preview the article from another computer where you have never visited that news site, or log out from the news site and test the link used in the External URL field to verify it still works. Also remember that some news sources do not provide their articles for an indefinite period of time (for free).

However, this may still be the best way to include someone else's news in your site's news list, because copying/republishing it might not be allowed.

Link internal page

Like an External URL type, this type of news article enables you to select a page to display when the visitor clicks the article header link. The only difference from the External URL type is that the target page is within your site instead of on another site.

This might be useful if you have a page describing an event but don't want to create a separate news article for the event to appear in your site's news feed.

News

This is the most common selection for authoring news articles. This article type enables you to contribute the body copy of the article.

You can preview most options of the default News Type in an example article. Figures 1 and 2 below show the news form as it was completed for the example article. The form labels are highlighted to help you locate and match them with the fields referenced in this document.

Insert news list on home page

By default, the news list displays only on the news page, e.g. www.ndsu.edu/yoursite/news/. If you want a list of recent articles or headlines to display on the home page,

  1. Insert a record from the HTML Objects folder in the Pagetree
    • Records shown in the Border column are provided for use in the Border column
      • The News Headlines record will insert a list of five (5) most recent, non-archived, news headlines
      • The Latest News record will insert a list with short previews of the three (3) most recent, non-archived, news headlines
A preview of this list type (with a content frame) is available on the CMS home page
    • Records in the Normal column are provided for use in the Normal column
      • The Latest News record will insert a list with short previews of the five (5) most recent, non-archived, news headlines
