The NDSU chapter of Golden Key International Honour Society and West Acres Shopping Center are scheduled to host a Read for the Record event Tuesday, Oct. 21, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Herberger’s Court at the shopping center.

Read for the Record began in 2006. Each year, the goal is to break the record for reading a book to as many children as possible on the designated day at the same time. Read for the Record works to promote literacy and education for all children. The 2014 event will feature “Bunny Cakes” by Rosemary Wells. NDSU Golden Key has participated in Read for the Record every year since 2008 while West Acres is participating for the third time.

The campaign book was read in Rockefeller Plaza and televised on NBC’s “Today” show to kick off the 2006-2013 events; the program is hosting a Read for the Record event this year, as well. The celebrity campaign chair for this year’s national event is Josh Duhamel, a Minot, North Dakota, native. Read for the Record has seen rapid growth since it began. In 2006, “The Little Engine that Could,” by Watty Piper was read to 78,791 kids at nationwide events. In 2013, the number of children had grown to 2,462,860, who heard “Otis,” by Loren Long.

Golden Key members, honorary members and advisers will read the event book along with other readers. Among the people scheduled to read are:

• Andrea Larson, “North Dakota Today” anchor, at 2 p.m.,

• Evie Myers, NDSU vice president for equity, diversity and global outreach at 3 p.m. and

• Lisa Budeau, “Valley Today anchor, at 3:30 p.m.
