Parts of the Digestive System

 Lips - organ of prehension in some species such as the horse.

Mouth - site of mastication and mixing food with saliva

bullettongue - very muscular - covered with various kinds of papillae

Salivary glands

bulletmoisten and lubricate food for swallowing
bulletdigestion (negligible)
bulletcooling (panting)

Pharynx - the throat. A common passageway for the digestive and respiratory systems.

Esophagus - muscular tube connecting the pharynx with the stomach.

Stomach

bulletruminant = multiple chambers

Small Intestine - made up of the duodenum, jejunum and ileum

Large Intestine - made up of the cecum, colon and rectum

Anus - exit to the outside world

Pancreas - an accessory digestive organ located near the duodenum. It produces both endocrine and exocrine secretions. Its exocrine secretion is rich in digestive enzymes and is carried down to the duodenum by the pancreatic duct.

Liver - has a multitude of functions including digestive functions.
