Grazing Technology Discussion - Menoken Farm

Ranchers will hear about available technologies and have a chance to ask questions.

Virtual fence and other grazing technologies are the topic of upcoming discussions hosted by NDSU Extension. 

There is a growing interest in the adaptation of precision livestock technologies, including technologies that can enhance grazing management. Grazing technologies currently available include virtual fence, water monitoring systems and smart tags. 

To date, ranchers in North Dakota have been hesitant to implement these technologies, in part due to the high upfront costs of adaptation and the logistics of integrating technologies into their current production systems. There are still a lot of unknowns regarding the implementation of some of these technologies at the ranch scale. 

North Dakota State University Extension will be hosting two discussions focused on grazing technologies to share more about available technologies and answer rancher questions. NDSU researchers will provide an overview of the technologies and share their experiences. Industry representatives will also be available to answer questions about their products. 

“The adaptation of these technologies has the potential to enhance grazing management while reducing labor,” says Miranda Meehan, NDSU Extension livestock environmental stewardship specialist. “The goal of these workshops is to help ranchers better understand the different technologies available and the pros and cons of integrating these technologies into their production systems.”
