Join NDSU Extension on Thursday, August 13, for the Fingal Plot Tour. See current corn research plots and hear from NDSU specialists about management practices that can improve productivity and profitability on North Dakota farms.

The tour will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. (CDT) at the Langemo farm, located 6 miles west of Fingal on Barnes County Road 34 (45th Street SE) or 11 miles south of I-94 Exit 296 (Peak exit) on Barnes County Road 27 (121st Avenue SE). Barnes County Extension Agent Alicia Harstad will host the event, along with local cooperator Chris Langemo. Brunch will be provided, courtesy of ADM and James Steinberger.

Participants will hear from four research experts showcasing current NDSU projects:

  • 2025 Corn Variety Trial Results. Learn how corn hybrids performed across North Dakota and how the NDSU Variety Trial Selection Tool can help identify hybrids best suited for your operation. Explore the results before the tour at https://vt.ag.ndsu.edu/list/corn .
  • Improving Nitrogen Recommendations. Fingal is one of several statewide research sites evaluating whether additional soil nitrogen measurements can improve predictions of the economic optimum nitrogen rate. Researchers are studying total nitrogen, carbon, and labile organic nitrogen fractions to refine recommendations and help producers make more informed nitrogen management decisions.
  • Row Spacing and Cover Crop Integration. See a new study comparing 60-inch corn with cover crops, 30-inch corn with cover crops, and a traditional 30-inch system. Researchers will evaluate yield, weed pressure, soil cover, and economic returns to better understand how these systems perform under North Dakota growing conditions.
  • Corn Insect Scouting. Learn how to identify common corn insect pests, recognize when populations reach economic thresholds, and make informed management decisions that protect yield while avoiding unnecessary insecticide applications.

Whether you're interested in hybrid selection, nutrient management, conservation practices, or integrated pest management, the Fingal Plot Tour offers an opportunity to see research in the field and visit with NDSU specialists about practical, science-based recommendations for North Dakota corn production.

We look forward to seeing you in Fingal on August 13!
