Description: Medium to large selection of thornless honeylocust with greater winter hardiness than the standard available cultivars in the nursery trade. Introduced by North Dakota State University, Northern Acclaim® is seedless and maintains attractive bright green foliage during the summer months changing to golden-yellow in the fall.

Natural Habitat: The parent plant is native to the United States.
Mature Size: Height: 40’ to 50’, Spread: 30’ to 35’
Form (Shape): Pyramidal to upright, spreading with age.
Growth Rate: Moderate to fast
Foliage: Deciduous. Summer color is light green, turning golden yellow in the fall.
Texture: Fine to medium
Flowers: Greenish yellow, blooming from late May to early June. Flowers are insignificant and not ornamental.
Fruit: This cultivar is virtually seedless (fruitless); it does not produce the pods associated with female honeylocust plants.
Light: Full sun
Soil: Well-drained soils, pH adaptable and tolerant of higher pH soils. Has shown good drought tolerance.
Propagation: Chip budding onto one-year field established rootstocks.
Failure Patterns: Failure is uncommon
Insects and Diseases: No serious disease or pest issues. Resistant to canker disease.
Landscape Use: Northern Acclaim® is an urban tolerant, turf friendly, and drought tolerant selection. Minimum leaf litter, making autumn cleanup unnecessary. Can be used as a boulevard tree, and in park plantings where an attractive, hardy ornamental tree is desired.
Availability: Available in nurseries within the upper Midwest.
