CAP Center Scientists

CAP Center Scientists have expertise in at least one of the four core principles of the CAP Center as applied to pharmacy and/or population health and prior experiences serving as the lead researcher on research projects, securing research funding, and as an author on peer-reviewed publications. Investigators utilizing the CAP Center will work with one or more Scientists depending on their project needs.  

 

CAP Center Senior Scientist

Mark Strand, PhD, MS, CPH 

Dr. Strand serves as the CAP Center Senior Scientist. He has significant experience in epidemiology research and translational research. He serves as the lead on project design and execution.  His experience in designing and carrying out translational research lends itself to expertise in designing and implementing proposed research that can be upscaled and which improves population health. Dr. Strand has expertise in primary prevention of opioid misuse, application of public health science to pharmacy practice, program evaluation of Maternal and Child Health work in North Dakota, and translational research of the Diabetes Prevention Program into China. 

In addition to his responsibilities as CAP Center Senior Scientist, Dr. Strand is a Professor in the Departments of Pharmacy Practice and Public Health at North Dakota State University. His affiliations include Editorial Board Member American Journal of Public Health, Governing Councilor North Dakota Public Health Association, former Associate Editor Preventing Chronic Disease journal. None of these affiliations present a potential conflict of interest.

CAP Center Scientists

Heidi Eukel, PharmD 

Dr. Eukel serves as a CAP Center Scientist. She is a pharmacist and pharmacy educator and has practiced in the community pharmacy setting for 10 years. Dr. Eukel has expertise in project design, program education, and clinical application. Her research interests include medication safety, scholarship of teaching and learning, and opioid misuse and accidental overdose. Dr. Eukel has been recognized as an innovator in pharmacy education.  

In addition to her responsibilities as a CAP Center Scientist, Dr. Eukel is a Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at North Dakota State University. Dr. Eukel is a member of the American Pharmacists Association, American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, and the American Association for Multidisciplinary Education and Research in Substance use and Addiction.

Brody Maack, PharmD, BCACP, CTTS 

Brody's LinkedIn

Dr. Maack serves as a CAP Center Scientist. He has extensive experience as an ambulatory care clinical pharmacist, faculty educator and researcher. Dr. Maack has expertise in clinical program design and implementation, and delivers coursework in cardiology and tobacco cessation. His research interests include pharmacy practice innovation and implementation, tobacco cessation and chronic disease prevention and treatment. 

In addition to his responsibilities as a CAP Center Scientist, Dr. Maack is an Associate Professor of Practice and the Vice Chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice at North Dakota State University. He is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist at Family HealthCare and is a member of the North Dakota Pharmacists Association, North Dakota Society of Health-System Pharmacists, American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, American Pharmacists Association, American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy and American College of Cardiology. He has held leadership positions within the North Dakota Society of Health-System Pharmacists and American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

Ellen Rubinstein, PhD, MA

Ellen's LinkedIn

Dr. Rubinstein serves as a CAP Center Scientist. She is a cultural and medical anthropologist by training whose research centers on the relationships between individuals and healthcare systems. She has conducted in-depth fieldwork in Japan and the U.S. and is especially interested in what care looks like and how it is performed by different actors, including both formal and informal caregivers, in a variety of clinical and community contexts. She teaches courses on qualitative research methods in addition to anthropology content courses.

In addition to her responsibilities as a CAP Center Scientist, Dr. Rubinstein is an assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology at North Dakota State University and an associate member of the University of Michigan Mixed Methods Program. She also holds a research affiliation with Keio University in Tokyo and co-chairs the Medical Anthropologists and Social Scientists in Health (MASSH) Topical Interest Group for the Society for Applied Anthropology.

Jayme Steig, PharmD 

Jayme's LinkedIn

Dr. Steig serves as a CAP Center Scientist. He has diverse practice experience in community pharmacy, quality improvement, government programs, and managed care. Dr. Steig has expertise in coaching healthcare professionals and developing data collection instruments for outcome reporting. His research interests include medication therapy management, chronic disease management, and care coordination.  

In addition to his responsibilities as a CAP Center Scientist, Dr. Steig is an Assistant Professor of Practice at North Dakota State University. He has a practice at Southpointe Pharmacy and is a member of the American Pharmacists Association, American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, North Dakota Pharmacists Association, and the North Dakota Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists.

Amy Werremeyer, PharmD, BCPP 

Amy's LinkedIn

Dr. Werremeyer serves as a CAP Center Scientist. She has a broad background in psychiatric pharmacy and has delivered curricula and coursework about patient-centered care in psychiatry and substance use disorders. Dr. Werremeyer has specific expertise in participatory research methods, stigma measurement instruments, and qualitative assessment of patient experiences. Her research interests include public health aspects of psychiatric disease and medication experience, prevention of opioid-related harms, and addressing mental health stigma.  

In addition to her responsibilities as a CAP Center Scientist, Dr. Werremeyer is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice at North Dakota State University. Dr. Werremeyer’s affiliations include: The College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacy where she is a past board member and strategic planning steering committee member, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy.
