Degree Type: B.S. Minimum Degree Credits to Graduate: 120

University Degree Requirements

1. Satisfactory completion of all requirements of the curriculum in which one is enrolled.
2. Earn a minimum total of 120 credits in approved coursework. Some academic programs exceed this minimum.
3. Satisfactory completion of the general education requirements as specified by the university.
4. A minimum institutional GPA of 2.00 based on work taken at NDSU.
5. At least 36 credits presented for graduation must be in courses numbered 300 or higher.
6. Transfer Students: Must earn a minimum of 60 credits from a baccalaureate-degree granting or professional institution.
   1. Of these 60, at least 36 must be NDSU resident credits as defined in #7.
   2. Within the 36 resident credits, a minimum of 15 must be in courses numbered 300 or higher and 15 credits in the major field of study.
7. At least 36 credits must be NDSU resident credits. Resident credits include credits registered and paid for at NDSU.

Degree Requirements and Notes

• Courses taken P/F may not be used to satisfy any requirements.
• GPA of 2.75 or better in the teaching specialty is required for placement in student teaching and exit from the program.
• A grade of ‘C’ or better is required in all Professional Education Requirement courses.
• A GPA of 2.75 or better in professional education as well as passing the appropriate Praxis II exam are required to exit the program.

Teacher candidates may enroll in the 300-level professional education courses before being formally admitted to the School of Education (SOE). Prior to enrolling in the 400-level courses, teacher candidates must complete the application for admission to the SOE; attain a minimum of a 2.75 grade point average overall in their course work and pass the Core Academic Skills for Educators exam or meet minimum scores on the ACT+.

Student teaching (clinical practice) is the culmination of the teaching program. During the clinical practice, teacher candidates apply the knowledge and skills acquired in their college courses to real-world classrooms under the supervision of experienced art teachers in middle or high schools. Faculty members from NDSU conduct regular on-site visits to support, encourage, and evaluate teacher candidates so that they gain the confidence and ability to join the teaching profession after graduation.

Students will be assigned individual advisors who will work closely with them in program planning. Students are encouraged to meet with their advisor(s) at least once a semester.

Upon completing this program, teacher candidates are eligible for certification to teach art in most states. Our program is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and approved by the North Dakota Education and Standards and Practices Board (ESPB).
