English education encompasses the four language arts: reading, writing, speaking and listening. The major includes a broad range of English and professional education courses to ensure teacher candidates fully understand:

  • Each of the language arts
  • Current theories of adolescent development
  • Best practices in secondary instruction

With 100% job placement, graduates of the program are well-prepared to enter the teaching profession. Teacher candidates apply their knowledge and build their skills through multiple clinical experiences in local schools, gaining real-world classroom experience before graduation.

Apply to the School of Education?

Typically, in the second semester of your sophomore year or after completing EDUC 321.

Register for Praxis CORE exams?

Usually during your second year. You may qualify for limited admission if you are registered for the exams, even if you have not yet taken them.

Register for Praxis content exams?

In the same semester you apply for student teaching.

Apply for student teaching?

Typically, in the first semester of your senior year.

Apply for Praxis fee or disability waivers?

As soon as you know when you plan to take the exams.

  • Before you are admitted to the School of Education: once or twice a semester to discuss your course plan, your School of Education application, and your Praxis exams. We can also discuss Praxis fee and disability waivers
  • You are admitted to the School of Education but not yet preparing for student teaching: two to three times per semester
    • The beginning of the semester to make sure you are on track to graduate
    • The middle of the semester to register for courses
    • Any time if you need help registering for the Praxis exam or applying for Praxis waivers or with field experiences for EDUC 481 or 482
  • You are in your final semester and preparing to student teach: three to four times per semester
    • The beginning of the semester to discuss your placement
    • Early in the semester to register for and discuss your final Praxis exams or to apply for Praxis waivers
    • Early in the semester to finalize your student teaching paperwork: though dates change each semester, applications are usually due in the first month of the semester
    • In the latter half of the semester to ensure you are set for graduation
  • You are student teaching and I am your university supervisor: seven times during the semester to complete the student teaching requirements: once before the semester begins, four observations, a mid-semester check-in, and an end-of-semester check-in.
  • You are student teaching, but I am not your university supervisor: as much or as little as you need
  • If you need help with job documents, job applications, or letters of recommendation
  • If you need to retake Praxis exams
  • To confirm you have met your graduation requirements
  • To submit any paperwork that may have been missed in earlier semesters for course substitutions or waivers.

Update your Plan of Study and share any changes with Dr. Chatham-Vazquez via email.

Yes, students are welcome to stop by during posted office hours.

Your Plan of Study is saved in your personal Google Drive folder shared with you by Dr. Chatham-Vazquez after your first meeting.
