In light of the severe storms and tornadoes recently, many landowners and homeowners are wondering "Can a tree be saved?" or "How much damage is too much damage?"

Generally, if there’s less than a third of the crown dead/damaged, the tree can usually tolerate the damage. Be sure to clean up the wounds with proper pruning. If one third to half of the crown is lost, the tree will begin to be stressed. Clean it up and try to keep it otherwise healthy in following years with proper watering. More than half of the crown lost – it’ll be stressed. The greater the loss, the greater the stress. While trees can sometimes recover under that amount of loss, a lot depends on how healthy it was before the storm, and the conditions afterwards.
