NDSU now offering Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner graduate certificate

Applications are open for a new online graduate certificate designed for graduates of accredited Family Nurse Practitioner programs interested in specializing in acute care for adult and aging populations.
The adult-gerontology acute care nurse practitioner graduate program is a combination of advanced coursework and hands-on clinical training, equipping graduates with the expertise to manage complex, high-risk health conditions in adult and geriatric patients.
“Our priorities were to build a really high-quality, affordable program that provides excellent education combined with an asynchronous, flexible delivery format,” said Mykell Barnacle, professor of practice in nursing.
While the specialty of adult-gerontology acute care is not new, it is increasingly becoming a highly desired credential by employers.
“There are a lot of nurse practitioners who see very complex, and acutely ill people and this program provides additional education and clinical training,” Barnacle said.
With medical advancements, people are able to live longer with complex medical conditions, requiring specialized care. This program aims to prepare nurse practitioners for providing such care in acute care settings.
Students enrolled in the program will be able to complete a large portion of their supervised clinical hours where they live and work. The clinical hours will also give students the opportunity to train with a variety of specialties, such as cardiology and critical care.
The 24-credit program is paired with two, two-day campus immersion experiences to provide hands-on learning, focused on hospital and internal medicine and practicing advanced procedural skills.
After completing the certificate, students will have expertise in managing acute, critical and complex illnesses and injuries. They will also be eligible to take the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Acute Care NP exam.
