Anonymous Estate Gift Establishes Dr. Cook Agricultural Leadership Scholars Program at NDSU

An anonymous estate gift has established the Dr. David Cook Agricultural Leadership Scholars Program at North Dakota State University, creating a new leadership development experience for students in the College of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Natural Resources.
The for-credit program will span approximately nine months and prepare students to lead in an increasingly complex agricultural landscape through coursework, industry engagement, professional development and experiential learning opportunities.
"This remarkable gift creates opportunities that will impact students for generations," said Adam Marx, professor of agricultural education and one of the program's faculty leaders. "Agriculture continues to face complex challenges and opportunities, and this program will help develop graduates who are prepared to lead with confidence, vision and purpose."
Named in honor of former NDSU President David Cook, the program reflects his longstanding commitment to leadership and student success.
"NDSU has a long tradition of preparing graduates who lead with integrity and purpose," Cook said. "The Agricultural Leadership Scholars Program builds on that tradition by equipping students with the skills, experiences and networks they need to lead the future of agriculture."
In a legacy statement, the donors shared their vision for the program and the next generation of agricultural leaders.
"This program reflects what we value: faith in education, belief in agriculture, and confidence in the next generation," the donors wrote. "It is our privilege to help share a legacy that will endure through students who lead with integrity and purpose for years to come."
The first cohort is expected to begin during the 2027-28 academic year and will bring together a select group of students for leadership seminars, industry site visits, networking opportunities and engagement with agricultural leaders across North Dakota and the Upper Midwest.
A fall kick-off event, Lead from Here, will be held Nov. 12 in the Memorial Union for students. The event will feature dinner, a keynote speaker and conversations about leadership development and future participation opportunities.
The Dr. David Cook Agricultural Leadership Scholars Program also will be featured during NDSU Giving Day, offering alumni, industry partners and friends an opportunity to invest in the future of agricultural leadership. Gifts made to the program will help expand student opportunities and unlock additional donor support.
