Battle of Cents-es to benefit Minnesota high school student

The 14th Battle of the Cents-es fundraiser this year will benefit 18-year-old Sophia Tweten, a junior at Becker High School in Hancock, Minnesota.

The annual fundraising competition between NDSU student ambassadors from the College of Health and Human Sciences and College of Engineering runs from March 24 to March 28. A kickoff event will be held on Sunday, March 23 at 6 p.m. in the Memorial Union’s Prairie Rose Room.

Tweten was born with a genetic disorder and congenital heart defects that have created a difficult, life-altering journey for her. Tweten had her fourth open heart surgery on Jan. 3 and is still hospitalized. She has had multiple serious complications including cardiac arrest and three emergency bleeding events that have affected her lungs, kidneys and heart, resulting in her needing dialysis as well as a tracheotomy.

Tweten is now slowly getting stronger through all the different therapies and care she is receiving at Children’s Hospital, but she will have a long road to recovery. Funds collected from Battle of the Cents-es will go toward Tweten’s continued care.

“We are so excited to give back to the Tweten family and show our support for Sophia,” said Erin Dummer, a pharmaceutical sciences student and ambassador for the College of Health and Human Sciences. “This event is a true testament to what the NDSU community stands for and also highlights the incredible work a group of college students can do in just one week. I am so thankful to be a part of this event, and I encourage all who are able, and willing, to donate to this incredible family."

Cash, coin and Venmo donations will be accepted. Coins and Venmo will be counted as positive points toward each college’s total. Dollar bills will act as negative points that will be subtracted from each college’s total.

Donations can be made on campus in the Aldevron Tower, the A. Glenn Hill Center and the Memorial Union.

In-person donation times are Monday through Thursday, March 24-27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Friday, March 28 from 10 a.m. to noon. Venmo donations can be made anytime the week of the event at @HHSAmbassadors and @ndsu-coe.
