From Fargo to the frontlines of venture capital, NDSU alum finds success

Emerging NDSU alum, Patrick Blaschke, poses for a photo.

For Patrick Blaschke, a single semester at the College of Business helped shape the trajectory of his career.

After earning his undergraduate degree in finance in May 2024 and completing his Master of Applied Economics in Fall 2025, Blaschke has stepped into the fast-paced world of venture capital as an Investment Analyst at Tribe Capital in San Francisco.

In his role, Blaschke evaluates investment opportunities, meets with founders and stays on top of global financial and geopolitical trends. His days are anything but predictable — filled with meetings, rapid decision-making and adapting to new priorities as they arise.

“You have a rough idea of what your day will look like, but things can change quickly,” he said. “If you need to meet a founder in 30 minutes or push an investment forward over a weekend, that becomes the priority.”

Blaschke’s path into venture capital was shaped early through his involvement in Pathway Ventures, a student-led organization that gives students hands-on experience evaluating startups. What began as a casual invitation from a friend quickly became a defining experience.

“Once I got involved, I knew right away this is what I wanted to focus on,” he said. “It gave me exposure to the real challenges entrepreneurs face and the opportunity to build something tangible.”

He later stepped into a leadership role, growing both the organization and his network — an experience that helped him stand out after graduation. Combined with his work as a research assistant through the Challey Institute, Blaschke developed a unique blend of analytical and leadership skills.

That combination continues to serve him well at Tribe Capital, a firm he discovered through a connection made at the Prairie Capital Summit in Fargo. Drawn to the firm’s distinct approach and rigorous interview process, Blaschke saw an opportunity to be part of a team that “thinks differently about the world.”

Now based in San Francisco, he’s energized by the environment around him.

“You’re constantly surrounded by ambitious, talented people building at the cutting edge of technology,” he said. “That kind of energy is infectious.”

Blaschke credits much of his journey to the mentors and experiences he had at NDSU, especially one class that changed everything.

“Dr. Hean’s International Finance course completely shifted my path,” he said. “That’s where I became a research assistant and where I got involved in Pathway Ventures. That one semester changed my life.”

“Patrick was an exceptional student. He is persistent and genuinely eager to learn, always seeking to understand everything in depth,” said Oudom Hean, assistant professor of finance. “Those qualities have clearly carried into his professional success.”

Looking back, Blaschke emphasizes the importance of going beyond the classroom.

“A lot of students get the degree, but what really sets you apart are the experiences you build along the way,” he said. “Side projects, leadership roles, and networking are what help you stand out.”
