Fargo has been named the top college town in North Dakota, and one of the best in the nation, according to WalletHub’s 2025 “Best College Towns and Cities in America” report.

NDSU’s hometown earned an overall score of 48.82, ranking 30th among more than 400 U.S. cities studied. Fargo also placed 11th nationally among midsize cities with a score of 54.45, solidifying its position as a top destination for students seeking a balance of affordability, opportunity and quality of life.

The annual WalletHub study compared cities across three key dimensions: Wallet Friendliness, Social Environment, and Academic and Economic Opportunities. Those categories were broken down into 31 metrics, measuring everything from housing costs and nightlife options to job growth and educational quality.

The Wallet Friendliness category evaluated the cost of living, average tuition and fees, rental prices and general affordability for students. The Social Environment category examined factors like the number of students per capita, share of residents aged 18 to 35, number of cafés and entertainment options, and safety. The largest and most heavily weighted category, Academic and Economic Opportunities, measured the quality of higher education, local job markets, median income and career potential for recent graduates.

Fargo’s strong showing across these metrics reflects what NDSU students experience every day, a city that offers opportunity, energy and connection. The downtown district features restaurants, music venues, coffee shops and art galleries that give the city its signature character.

Outdoor recreation is within easy reach, from the Red River trails to nearby parks. For students, it means being able to study, work and unwind in one place. Many NDSU students take advantage of Fargo’s growing job market through internships, research partnerships and part-time work while earning their degrees. The city’s affordability also plays a major role in attracting students who want a complete college experience without high living costs.

Being named the top college town in North Dakota reflects how Fargo and NDSU are intertwined. The city’s culture, businesses and residents support the university, while NDSU students, faculty and research help drive Fargo’s growth and innovation.

That connection creates a unique environment where students can build meaningful relationships, gain hands-on experience and feel part of a community that values their success.

For NDSU students, Fargo’s recognition by WalletHub affirms what they already know: it’s a place where you can thrive academically, socially and professionally. It’s a city large enough to explore and small enough to feel at home.
