Kristy L. Archuleta, professor in the financial planning program at the University of Georgia, is scheduled to give the annual Gertrude Weigum Hinsz Lecture at North Dakota State University.

She is scheduled to present “Beyond the Therapy Room: Blending Marriage and Family Therapy and Personal Finance” on Thursday, March 21 at 3:30 p.m. in the Prairie Rose Room of Memorial Union. The event is free and open to the public.

“Not too long ago, the idea of integrating marriage and family therapy with personal finance seemed unconventional, even improbable,” said Archuleta. “Yet, the intersection of these two domains holds profound implications for the well-being of families and couples, particularly as they navigate one of the most common sources of conflict: money.”

During the Hinsz Lecture, Archuleta will describe the evolution of what she helped pioneer as financial therapy. Drawing from her experiences as a financial planning professor and a marriage and family therapist, she will share insights from her pioneering research and the establishment of groundbreaking academic programs in financial therapy.

Archuleta merges her expertise in both marriage and family dynamics and financial planning and counseling to address the intricate relationship between individuals, couples, families and money. By delving into the underlying thoughts, emotions, and behaviors related to financial decisions, she empowers participants to move beyond reactive responses to cultivate healthier mindsets toward money.

She will share how financial therapy not only fosters financial well-being but also enhances relational harmony, enabling individuals and families to transform how they think, feel, act and relate to each other in the realm of finance.

This year’s Hinsz Lecture will be valuable for educators, students, mental health therapists, financial planners, or anyone interested in holistic approaches to personal finance. The lecture will offer invaluable insights and practical strategies to navigate the complex interplay between money and relationships.

The Hinsz Lecture is hosted by the NDSU Department of Human Development and Family Science. The lecture is in memory of Gertrude Weigum Hinsz, who had a long-standing commitment to child development, healthy and happy living and quality of family life.

“We are honored and excited to have Dr. Archuleta visit NDSU,” said Margaret Fitzgerald, NDSU professor of human development and family science. “She is a trailblazer in the field of Financial Therapy. Faculty, staff, students and members of the community will find her to be an entertaining and insightful speaker and will find takeaways that will benefit them personally and professionally.”

Archuleta holds the Betsy Barnard Sages Endowed Professorship for Financial Therapy and Financial Planning. She co-founded the Financial Behavior Keynote Group and the Financial Therapy Association. Archuleta has garnered national and international attention as a speaker and author who has published numerous scholarly articles and co-edited two books on financial planning, financial therapy, financial counseling and mental health.
