NDSU graduate earns Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching

NDSU graduate Alexis Wolf, a mathematics educator at John Glenn Middle School in Maplewood, Minnesota, has been awarded the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching by the National Science Foundation. The honor highlights Wolf's contributions to mathematics education and her commitment to encouraging a love for learning among her students and colleagues.

“Receiving recognition for my teaching is validating and humbling,” Wolf said. “I reflect on my practice daily and work hard to make sure my students are getting an education that meets them where they are at and encourages them to grow. The Presidential Award is an absolute honor and energizes me to continue learning to provide the best possible educational experience for my students.”

With 12 years of teaching experience, Wolf has spent the past decade shaping the minds of seventh-grade students at John Glenn Middle School. Before that, she taught seventh and eighth-grade mathematics at Plymouth Middle School. Her passion for teaching mathematics extends beyond the classroom, as she plays an instrumental role in advancing instructional practices among her peers.

As a building instructional leader, Wolf has introduced data-driven instructional strategies and advanced a sense of community within classrooms, enabling educators and students to thrive. 

Her approach prioritizes high expectations and encourages students to take ownership of their learning through effective questioning and note-taking strategies. This innovative teaching philosophy has helped her students excel academically and develop confidence in their ideas.

Wolf is an active member and regional director of the Minnesota Council of Teachers of Mathematics, where she works to promote best practices in mathematics education across the state. 

Wolf earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics and mathematics education from NDSU and a master’s degree in mathematics education at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

The Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching is the highest recognition bestowed upon mathematics and science teachers in the United States. It celebrates educators who demonstrate outstanding teaching practices and leadership in their field.
