NDSU interior design students set to participate in Scheels Design Challenge on Sept. 7

Students in NDSU’s interior design program are getting ready to set their inspiration wild during this year’s Scheels Design Challenge on Sunday, Sept. 7, at Fargo’s Scheels Home and Hardware store.

During the challenge 15 students will have under four hours to work in teams to design a small space in the store related to a specific theme. The themes include ‘Cozy Cabin,’ ‘Updated Traditional,’ ‘Everything Natural,’ ‘Modern Masculine’ and ‘Rugged Rustic.’

Community members will be able to view the designs and vote for their favorite from Sept. 7 through Sept. 14. A link will become available on Sept. 7 for people to vote online.

Susan Ray-Degges, a professor and coordinator for the interior design program, said the Scheels Design Challenge provides students with valuable skills and hands-on experience in designing, problem-solving and working with others, including local interior designers.

The feedback they receive from industry professionals is especially meaningful, encouraging reflection and refinement,” Ray-Degges said. “Challenges like this truly bring design education to life — enhancing student confidence, professional readiness and community engagement.”

The students will work closely with Leah Martin, an interior designer for Scheels and NDSU interior design graduate. Martin said she is looking forward to connecting with students and sharing her industry knowledge.

“As a 2002 graduate of the NDSU Interior Design Program, I find great joy in giving back to a program that has shaped my career and continues to inspire the next generation of designers,” she said. “Being part of this initiative allows me to support and influence students in a field that means so much to me, both personally and professionally."
