The NDSU Office of Multicultural Programs is scheduled to host an Indigenous Peoples Day event on Monday, Oct. 9.

A tipi will be erected from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. near the Babbling Brook on campus. A program will take place from 11 a.m. to noon with singers opening the program and staff from NDSU’s American Indian Public Health department set to discuss their ongoing work in Native American communities throughout the region.

Jaclynn Davis Wallette, director of the Office of Multicultural Programs, said Indigenous Peoples Day is a chance for communities to come together to learn about each other.

“It’s a time for the community to really think about the experiences of the Native people,” Davis Wallette said.

Indigenous People’s Day honors Native Americans, their resilience and their contributions to American society throughout history.

“It’s a time to say, ‘let’s look at what has happened to Native American people,’” Davis Wallette said.

Other local Indigenous People’s Day events include an Indigenous Peoples Day Lunch and Learn from noon to 2 p.m. at the Hjemkomst Center in Moorhead. A powwow presented by Moorhead Indian Education and Fargo/West Fargo Native American Education will be held at Moorhead High School starting at 6 p.m.

The events are free and open to the public.
