Faculty, staff, returning students and President David Cook cheered on new students as they walked through the university gates on Monday, Aug. 25.

The annual Walk Through the Gates event marks the first milestone new students have as they embark on their college journey. Afterwards students attended the Welcome to the Academy event where Cook and wife Kate Cook introduced themselves and provided valuable advice.

“At NDSU, you’ll discover countless opportunities, whether that’s in the classroom, in research labs, on the field or in student organizations. Take advantage of them. Dive into your academics but also get involved. Join clubs, attend events and connect with others. This week is packed with opportunities to get started,” Cook said.

Following the Cook’s welcome, Bill Cordes, who has presented at NDSU for 20 years, shared the same sentiment with students, encouraging them to say yes to everything positive during their first 60 days on campus.

Monday’s activities were part of Welcome Week, a time that connects students through a variety of activities. Other Welcome Week events include the Block Party on Aug. 28 and the Student Involvement Expo on Sept. 3.

“We are so proud to welcome you to NDSU. You are now part of a community that values hard work, innovation and care for one another,” Cook told students. “This is your home, and together we’re going to make it a year to remember.”

NDSU’s first classes began at 4 p.m. on Monday. The first full day of classes is Tuesday, Aug. 26.
