David Buchanan, associate dean of the College of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Natural Resources, will retire on June 1 after 16 years of leadership and service to NDSU.
A reception will be held Tuesday, May 9, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Sahnish room of the Memorial Union. There will be a short program with cake and light refreshments served.
“I want to thank David for his servant leadership style, his love of students and teaching and the countless ways he has sought to make NDSU a better place for students, faculty and our stakeholders,” says Greg Lardy, vice president for Agricultural Affairs.
Buchanan joined NDSU as professor in the animal sciences department in 2007. He served as department head 2007-2009 and was named associate dean of the College of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Natural Resources in 2012.
Prior to joining NDSU, Buchanan was on the faculty of Oklahoma State University for 27 years.
A Fargo native, Buchanan is a 1975 graduate of NDSU, earning his bachelor’s degree in animal science. He completed his masters and doctorate degrees in animal science from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.
He has won teaching awards from the American Society of Animal Science (for which he was also named a fellow), North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture and U.S. Department of Agriculture. He received an honorary state FFA degree from North Dakota FFA and was named a distinguished educator by the NDSU Blue Key honor society.
His research career, with an emphasis on animal breeding and genetics, resulted in more than 80 refereed journal articles, 14 book chapters and more than 300 other publications.
Buchanan and his wife, Cindy, have three children and one grandson.
