Alan Kallmeyer

Dr. Alan R. Kallmeyer brings more than three decades of experience at North Dakota State University to his role as Dean of the College of Engineering. Since joining the faculty at NDSU in 1995, he has held key leadership positions, including Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering for 17 years and Interim Dean of the College of Business.

As Dean of the College of Engineering, Dr. Kallmeyer played a central role in securing state and philanthropic support for the $100 million Richard Offerdahl ’65 Engineering Complex. Opened in 2026, the facility added over 120,000 square feet of state-of-the-art academic and research space alongside extensive building renovations, marking one of the largest facility expansions in NDSU history and positioning the university as a premier regional hub for engineering education.

During his tenure as Chair of Mechanical Engineering, enrollment in the department more than doubled, research expenditures quadrupled, and K–12 outreach programs expanded to reach thousands of students across the Upper Midwest.

An expert in the durability and failure analysis of advanced engineering materials, Dr. Kallmeyer developed life-prediction methodologies for materials under complex multiaxial loadings. These models have been widely adopted by industry to enhance component reliability and extend design lifetimes. Over his career, he has secured more than $18 million in research funding as PI or Co-PI from agencies including the National Science Foundation, Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Army Research Office, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and General Electric.

Dr. Kallmeyer holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Utah, as well as an M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Iowa.
