Captain Sommer is an Air Force ROTC instructor at Detachment 610, North Dakota State University, in Fargo, North Dakota. His primary duties include leading, recruiting, and training prospective officers on USAF & USSF foundations, history, leadership & national security affairs.

Captain Sommer commissioned in the U.S. Air Force in May 2016. In December 2017, he graduated from Intelligence Officer training at Goodfellow Air Force Base. He spent five years in the intelligence community. His first three years were at the National Air and Space Intelligence Center assigned to the Force Employment Squadron at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. He then spent two years with the Defense Intelligence Agency in Seoul, Republic of Korea. He returned to the U.S. in February 2023 where he has since served as an Air Force ROTC instructor and as Operations Flight Commander for Detachment 610 in Fargo, North Dakota.
