Areas of Study & Research
Indrani Deka is a first-year Ph.D. student in the Department of History at North Dakota State University. Originally from Assam in Northeast India, her academic work centers on the everyday lives of marginalized communities, with a particular focus on the experiences of women living along the India-Bangladesh border. Her current research examines the intersection of gender, migration, and violence, and how political boundaries have shaped and continue to shape the lives of borderland women in Assam.
Indrani earned her Master’s degree in History from Banaras Hindu University, where her dissertation focused on the socio-economic conditions of tea plantation workers in Assam since the colonial era. Her research emphasized the use of oral histories and community memory to uncover perspectives often excluded from dominant historical narratives. Prior to joining NDSU, she served as an Assistant Professor of History at Pub Kamrup College (Gauhati University), teaching courses in Ancient, European, and Global History, while also mentoring undergraduate students in research and academic writing.
Her scholarly work includes peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and presentations at national and international conferences. She has written on topics ranging from cultural identity and education policy to insurgency and the political agency of women in Northeast India. She is an active member of the Indian History Congress and the Northeast India History Association, and in 2025, she was awarded the Virginia George Scholarship by the NDSU History Department for her academic excellent.
Outside of her academic life, Indrani enjoys traveling, exploring new cultures, and tasting regional cuisines.Often tracing their historical roots and cultural significance. These experiences enrich both her worldview and her historical imagination.
