Bio

• Dr. Mark T. Hamann serves as Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Director of the NIH Funded Pancreatic Cancer Center.

• He recently served as the Charles and Carol Cooper/SmartState Endowed Chair of Drug Discovery and Biomedical Sciences at the MUSC College of Pharmacy and with Public Health in the MUSC College of Medicine. He was also a Member of the College of Graduate Studies and served on the Admissions Committee for 5 years.

• He also holds a Current Adjunct appointment with The University of Maryland’s Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology and previously was an Adjunct Professor at the Bigelow Marine Laboratory in Maine.

• Dr. Hamann began his career in cGMP pharmaceutical manufacturing at Solvay Pharmaceuticals (now Ani Pharma) in Baudette, Minnesota.

• He obtained a Ph.D. degree in Organic Chemistry at the University of Hawaii, under the guidance of the late Professor Paul J. Scheuer.

• He discovered the lead anticancer agent, kahalalide F which entered clinical trials with the licensing partner PharmaMar from Madrid, Spain.

• Dr. Hamann has published over 300 scientific papers, reviews, and book chapters focused on Natural Products based drug discovery and development.

• Dr. Hamann has 13 issued patents focused on composition and use of new molecules for the control of cancer and infectious diseases.

• He has mentored and guided over 100 graduate students/postdoctoral fellows and visiting scholars.

• Served as an Associate Editor for Biochimica et Biophysica Acta, General Subjects.

• Dr. Hamann has received numerous awards including the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy/American Foundation of Pharmaceutical Education Faculty New Investigator Award, NIH KO2 Award, and American Society of Pharmacognosy Young Investigator Award Presentation and Research of the Year Awards at the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy and MUSC College of Pharmacy.

• He Chaired the Northern Mississippi Section of the American Chemical Society as well as numerous National Institute of Health Study Sections for both research and training grants.

• Dr Hamann has been invited to speak at several hundred meetings and conferences and works closely with the pharmaceutical industry.

• Successful in launching two technology companies. Oxford Laboratories and Sycamore BioPharma. This includes developing contracts with partners and financial management and reporting.

• Over the last twenty-five years Dr. Hamann has raised over 20 million dollars in competitive grants and contracts and successfully managed these funds generating 13 issued patents and 6 strong drug leads for the control of cancer, infectious diseases and organ failure.

• The students from Dr. Hamann’s research program have gone on to become leaders in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries as well as leaders in academic programs.
