Dr. Shawn Stumphf brings a cross-disciplinary background in accounting and finance to his teaching, research, and professional practice, with specialized expertise in valuation, forensic analysis, and transaction advisory. His professional experience focuses on business valuation, forensic accounting, and economic damage analysis, including expert witness testimony in federal and state courts. He has authored more than 1,000 consulting and expert reports for litigation, transaction, tax, ownership transition, and advisory purposes across a wide range of industries, with engagements involving businesses ranging from local sole proprietorships to international companies with annual revenue exceeding half a billion dollars.
Dr. Stumphf is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in North Dakota, Minnesota, and South Dakota. His professional credentials include Certified Fraud Examiner, Accredited in Business Valuation, Accredited Senior Appraiser in Business Valuation, Chartered Global Management Accountant, and Certified Merger and Acquisition Advisor. He has also completed specialized training in mediation and arbitration procedures, equipment appraisal, real estate appraisal, and real estate sales. This combination of professional practice, courtroom experience, and applied financial expertise informs his work in the classroom and in his research.
Areas of Study & Research
Dr. Stumphf’s research interests center on accounting and finance questions that affect real-world decision-making. His current research focuses on private capital markets, investor reactions, fraud examination, business valuation, and economic damage modeling. His work reflects an applied research agenda shaped by professional practice, financial analysis, and the challenges faced by private businesses, investors, attorneys, and advisors.
